The RP Assist app is a smartphone application that is available from the Apple Store for iOS devices and from Google Play for Android devices.

The app is compatible with devices operating iOS 8.0 (or above) and Android 4.1 (or above).

Radiation Protection (RP) Assist app is designed to help practitioners working with radiation and radioactive substances. It is suitable for use by Radiation Protection Supervisors (RPSs), Radiation Protection Officers (RPOs) and other radiological protection practitioners.

RP Assist has four main screens: Conversion, Decay, Activity Calc and Dose Rate.

The conversion screen contains six different converters to cover the most common situations where units may need to be converted. These are radioactivity, radioactivity concentrations, absorbed dose, absorbed dose rate, effective dose and effective dose rate.

The decay screen gives you the ability to decay a parent radionuclide for a user defined time period or date range. The RP Assist app contains half-life information for all 1252 radionuclides published in ICRP Publication 107. Half-life data from ICRP Publication 107 is used with permission from the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP). Not only can you use this data in calculations but it is also possible to just view the half-life data for a radionuclide of interest when using the app.

The activity calc screen gives you the ability to calculate the mass of a radioactive substance when given the radioactivity quantity present. This screen also allows you to calculate the amount of radioactivity present when you know that the mass of a radioactive substance that is present. The RP Assist app contains calculated specific activity information for 1252 radionuclides based on the half-life data published in ICRP Publication 107. Half-life data from ICRP Publication 107 is used with permission from the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP). Not only can you use this data in calculations but it is also possible to just view the specific activity data for a radionuclide of interest when using the app.

The dose rate screen contains three additional screens: point source, line source and disc source.

The point source calculator uses the inverse square law and allows the user to calculate radiation dose rates at different distances if the dose rate is known at a specific distance. There is also the option available to calculate the distance that a specific radiation dose rate will occur at if the radiation dose rate is known at another defined distance.

The line source calculator assumes that radioactivity is homogeneously distributed along the length of the line and depending on where the dose rate points of interest are in relation to the length of the line then it is possible to determine the radiation dose rate at another point perpendicular to the line if the dose rate is known at a similar perpendicular specific point.

The disc source calculator assumes that radioactivity is homogeneously distributed in a circular disc shape. This calculator allows the user to calculate the dose rate at a known point above the centre of the disc based on the dose rate at another known point. This calculator also allows the user to calculate the distance that a specific dose rate will occur at above the centre of a disc source if the dose rate at another specified point is known.

We have prepared a series of six FREE tutorial videos for you to watch, including some worked examples, to help you understand how to use our smartphone application. We hope that you find these to be useful.

About the instructor

Bob Kerr BSc(Hons) CRadP FSRP MNucI MRSC MSaRS

Hi there, thanks for looking at and hopefully signing up for one of our online radiation safety training courses.  I am the Director of RP Alba Ltd. I have been working with and advising users of radiation and radioactivity for over 20 years. Most of my radiological work has been in various parts of the United Kingdom (UK), however I have also performed work with radiation and radioactive materials on various continents.  I hold a Certificate of Competence from RPA2000 to act as a Radiation Protection Adviser (RPA) and a further Certificate of Competence to act as a Radioactive Waste Adviser (RWA). I am a Chartered Radiation Protection Professional, a Fellow of the Society for Radiological Protection, a Member of the Nuclear Institute, a Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry, a Member of the Association of University Radiation Protection Officers (AURPO) and a Member of the Safety and Reliability Society.  I have first hand experience of working with clients in various sectors that use radiation or work with radioactivity. My first hand radiological experience includes work with the following: veterinary, dental, food manufacturing, X-ray manufacturer/suppliers, industrial radiography, nuclear, universities, schools, class 7 dangerous goods transportation companies and contaminated land remediation. I have personally been involved in developing, reviewing and/or approving the content of all of our training courses. I welcome any feedback that you can give us on our courses to help RP Alba Ltd continually improve our courses and services to your benefit.
